(Portland, Maine) – Maine Fiber Company Inc. (MFC) is pleased to announce a successful field trial of 100G optical transmission over 62 miles between Portland, ME and Damariscotta, ME.  “The trial, which was conducted on a segment of MFC’s longhaul route from Canada to Boston, clearly indicates that our fiber optic infrastructure and associated colocation facilities are capable of handling the latest high performance optronics” said MFC’s Vice President of Business Development, Jeff McCarthy. 


MFC’s 1150 route mile dark fiber network extends from Boston to the Canadian border and throughout the State of Maine.  Designed as a middle-mile transport network, it consists of three (3) primary rings and was completed in September of 2012.  Built using high-count Prysmian cable with Corning SMF-28e+ glass and fusion splicing, optical losses are consistently -20db per km or better.


The trial used the Ekinops 360 platform and its 100G solution. The 100G solution occupies a very small footprint at 1 RU (less than 2“ high) and a maximum power draw of only 230W. The small footprint allowed for a very fast 100G turn-up requiring only 1 technician per site to mount the units and run power to an existing fuse panel using a 10A fuse. Along with the 100G solution, a 2 RU chassis was used to house the optical amplifier and multiplexer.


The Ekinops T-Chip® (Transport-on-a-Chip) technology provides industry-leading capabilities at 100G. The 100G solution is the industry’s first software programmable transponder (100G services over a 100G line) and muxponder (10x10G services over a 100G line) in one.  This provides unprecedented flexibility and investment protection:  Service providers can start out with 10G services today then move to 100G as needed without having to buy new modules.  Also, additional features such as multi-protocol support may be added at no cost.

The 100G unit was configured as a muxponder for the trial providing 10x10G services over the 100G line.


Independent testing of the throughput performance was conducted by Concord Communications Associates, Inc., (CCAI) of Concord, NH.  CCAI utilized a JDSU T-BERD® 5800 test set to generate 10 GigE LANPHY traffic.  A combination of fiber loopbacks and cascades was used to pass the 10 GigE traffic over all 10 ports for an aggregate of 100G traffic between the two sites.  A RFC 2544 birth certificate and 6 hour soak test confirmed throughput of 9.9996G for all frame sizes with no dropped packets and an average packet jitter of 0 microseconds.


Three test scenarios were run within the RFC 2544 test suite including frame loss, throughput and latency.

All tests passed easily with 100% throughput at all frame sizes and zero frame loss. Round-Trip latency was measured at 1,016.35 micro-seconds.  The 100G unit itself contributed only 32 micro-seconds latency which is better than most 10G muxponders, particularly with a very strong forward error correction (FEC) which supports down to 12.5 dB OSNR.
